There are people out there who actually want random greasy strangers to touch their precious, precious cars?

Wait, what? You can’t pump your own petrol? Also can’t you pay at the pump?

I have to admit this time of year it would be nice to be able to stay in the warm car, and let someone else pump it.

I wonder if they let you plug in your Tesla or Leaf or whatever in New Jersey, or if they insist on having an attendant come out and do it for you?

Just pump your own gas. It’s not that hard, mmkay?

I’m genuinely shocked to know that they haven’t been pumping their own gas before now. There’s some places around here that will pump for you, but it’s a special thing and costs a little more per liter

Yes, by law in NJ you can’t pump your own petrol. You just hand your card (or cash) to the attendant and they use it on the pump.

On second thought, maybe I shouldn’t go to New Jersey this weekend, ‘tis a silly place.

Isn’t the justification something about giving poor people more job opportunities?

TIL taxes pay for gas pump attendants.

Is there an underlying reason like job creation or safety?

The excuse is safety, but they’re never really committed fully to that story so who knows honestly.

I almost stopped at the only full service station in our area this morning. However ours in a tiny locally owned one and the guy that pumps gas there used to own a roadside fruits and vegetables stand so he isn't a stranger.

I think it is one of the laws from the early days of the automobile that they never got rid of just for the sake of tradition and job creation.

The law was originally made due to safety, but the idea of “easy jobs” is why its still around

Now I realize this is personal, but I’m so glad we have attendants in Jersey because my wife, a wheelchair user, can’t pump her own on the rare occasion she has traveled out of state on her own it is a major hassle to get help. Now she can drive to any station in the state independently and not have to worry about it.

Again, I realize that is a small population and those problems could be mitigated if set up right, but I’m happy living in a pump service state.

I completely understand that. I’m just tired of the entirely spoiled attitude of people in this state when it comes to pumping gas.

Contrary to my screenname, I haven’t been to new jersey. I mean, how does it work with someone else pumping gas in 21st century? Are some small group of 3-5 people just standing outside waiting for cars to come up so they can do a job that takes like 3min to do? Whats the wage for that?

Kinja'd!!! Supreme Chancellor and Glorious Leader SaveTheIntegras > NJAnon

They stand inside their little stations or the main building and wait till someone pulls into the station. If i see this I tell them to go back inside and let me do it.

Some American states do this, I came across it in Oregon too. Filling your tank is a skilled business, it takes some kid on the minimum wage plus tips to do it.

Apparently some female customers like it, it’s saves them having to wander around a deserted filling station at night to refuel and pay.

There are buttons on the gas stations around here in WNY (I assume it might even by a NY law, I don’t know) that have handicapp assistance on them if you need help to pump your gas.

But I guess that doesn’t completely mitigate the problem as they’re located on the pump itself.

We have seen that in PA and other states...most of them she can’t reach from inside the car.

Yeah, there’s gotta be an easier way of doing it for those who have issues getting in and out of cars easily.
